TMJ Syndrome
Jaw muscle tension, stiff jaw, popping jaw or jaw pain are some of the expressive terms for TMJ or Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome, which is a condition affecting the function and movement of the jaw. A well known cause of TMJ Syndrome is Grinding Teeth (Bruxism) which can have several causes ranging from stress and anxiety to malocclusion. Patients who grind their teeth often are unaware as it mostly occur during sleep.
Symptoms of TMJ may be:
- Jaw clicking and popping
- Stiff or sore jaw muscles
- Locking of the jaw joint
- Ear pain
- Headaches
- Pain in the temple area
A Botox injection is used to relax and control the muscle tension in the Temporomandibular Joint.
Alternatively, a custom made appliances, similar to gum shield, can prevent clenching of teeth and reduce harmful effects of grinding.
