Migraine
Botox is used for the treatment of chronic migraine and has been approved as safe and effective treatment by the NHS in the UK since 2010. It is unclear exactly why Botox works for a migraine, however for most patients it is highly effective in providing continuous relief from pain for about 6 months or sometimes longer.
The treatment consists of a series of intra-muscular injections which has the effect of paralyzing the target muscles and thereby
- relax muscles around the head and thereby reduce blood pressure within the brain
- reduce the nerves’ ability to send pain signals during a migraine
- prevent the nerves from sending signals that will lead to a migraine
When applied as an anti-wrinkle treatment, the relaxation of muscular tension also seems to block one of the primary causes of migraines.
